Browne Backs Premier on Decolonization

A local historian and political commentator has thrown his full support behind a recent decision taken by Honourable Premier Donaldson Romeo asking for the withdrawal of a 2012 request to have Montserrat removed from the list of territories which need to be decolonized.

Chedmond Browne says Mr. Romeo’s action is the right one for the right reasons including to ensure that the British government honors its obligations to Montserrat.

Premier Romeo made the request of the “Special Committee on Decolonization” during the recent United Nations Sustainable Development Seminar in Grenada.

" I fully agree with the position taken by the Honourable Donaldson Romeo to the United Nations on this particular issue. It is my opinion that the Honourable Rueben Meade made a huge error in 2012. Notwithstanding the fact, that in my opinion, i think Mr. Meade knew exactly what he was doing and he knew what he expected to get from Britain for requesting our delisting from the United Nations list of Colonies."

Premier Romeo had explained that by remaining on the list of territories which need to be decolonized, Montserrat will be assisted in receiving much-needed support through the work of the Committee, to which the UK Government will be held accountable under the legal force of the UN Charter, Article 73.
