Property Owner Wants Action on Loose Livestock Problem

A local attorney is calling on the Ministry of Agriculture to reintroduce the animal pound in Brades.

Jean Kelsick says loose animals have defiled properties in the area including his chambers.

In a letter to the Minister of Agriculture the Honourable Crenston Buffonge, Lawyer Kelsick states that for three days a herd of about a dozen loose sheep have been in and out of his Brades office property where they defecated on the road and in his parking lot, as well as the driveway of the neighbouring property.

He pointed out that the sheep also did considerable damage to the garden by eating the plants growing in it.

The attorney says he was told by the Agricultural Department that there are no longer any livestock wardens or a pound for the Brades area, and that this means it is not possible to have lose livestock caught and impounded as used to be the case.

According to Mr. Kelsick, the employment of animal wardens capable of catching loose livestock and the maintenance of a livestock pound are key functions of the Agricultural Department.

He stresses that it is critical that both crop farmers and property owners are protected from the predations of loose livestock.
