Access to Arable Land Creates Obstacle for Food Security

A University of the West Indies Professor has warned OECS territories, including Montserrat, that the unavailability of land is one of the main obstacles to food security.

Professor Leonard O’Garro says each member state must ensure that sufficient arable land is available to increase food production.

He was addressing the matter during a discussion on the Food and Agriculture System Transformation (FAST) Strategy, themed "Strategies to combat food insecurity in the OECS subregion through private sector investment".

Professor Leonard O’Garro is a biologist at the University of the West Indies.

Montserrat has signed on to CARICOM’s initiative of reducing food imports by 25 percent by the year 2025.
