Local Veteran Attorney Reiterates Call for Legal Aid Amidst What he Claims is the Unfair Sentencing of a Young Man

A veteran attorney at law here has voiced his concern over what he deems “the unfair three-year sentence” that was meted out to a young man recently.

David S. Brandt says this development again magnifies the urgent need for legal aid in Montserrat.

He claims that if the law was followed correctly, then a third of the punishment would have automatically been shaved off the sentence.

Mr. Brandt further explains that the position of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) is coined as what he refers to as “a minister of justice” and as such, his role therefore is not to see that ever person is convicted and goes to jail.

The veteran attorney says the DPP must look at the overall facts and put the case before the magistrate or judge.
