Internet Disruption Likely To Last 7-10 days

The Government of Montserrat through its communication regulatory authority MICA (Montserrat Info- Communication Authority), is informing the public of an ongoing disruption of services affecting both Digicel and Flow, the two telecommunication providers on the island.

The interruption is a result of damages to the Subsea Fibre Link connecting Montserrat to Antigua.

The break is estimated to be about 8km from the landing point in Dickenson Bay, Antigua. As a consequence, broadband and mobile networks are experiencing disruptions.

Both Digicel and Flow are actively engaged in resolving the issue and restoring services to their full capacity.

They say that their dedicated teams are working tirelessly to rectify the problem which is likely to take approximately 7-10 days to repair the cable.

The Ministry of Communications, Works, Energy and Labour has indicated that the Government of Montserrat is closely monitoring the situation recognizing there will continue to be loss of service to the consumers until the cable is repaired.

Despite the disruption, Digicel has indicated that their Mobile Phone Network is now fully functional utilizing the Microwave Link to Antigua. Their Internet service is currently online but functioning sub-optimally due to bandwidth constraints on the microwave link whilst the cable TV services remains offline.

As of Monday morning, Flow has temporarily restored Mobile and Direct Internet Services to major customers using the Microwave links to Antigua.

Both telecoms providers request the patience and understanding of their customers during this period.

Further information regarding the progress of the restoration work will be provided as soon it becomes available.
