Resident Seismologist Urges the Public to Stay Earthquake-Ready

Resident seismologist at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO), Rod Stewart, is urging the people of Montserrat to stay earthquake-ready as earthquakes cannot be predicted.

Speaking on the latest Volcano Vibes radio programme, the seismologist discussed the importance of staying prepared in the event of an earthquake.

Unlike hurricanes, Stewart explained that earthquakes cannot be tracked or predicted.

As Montserrat is located in an earthquake zone, earthquakes can happen at any time, so a constant state of preparedness is crucial. Stewart noted that an 8.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the island in the 1800s.

The seismologist also explained the common misconception that a big earthquake should happen every 100 years.

When asked about the earthquake in Haiti, Stewart stated that it was not “the big one” but the poor living conditions in the country led to the high death toll.

While he doesn’t believe the big earthquake is “overdue” Rod urged the public to take the necessary steps to be prepared.

He specifically highlighted the need for an earthquake kit, stating that everyone should create one.
