Government of Montserrat Receives Funding to Boost Renewable Energy Transition
The Government of Montserrat has received a major boost in its renewable energy ambitions with the announcement of up to £5.9 million in funding from the United Kingdom for the 2025/26 financial year.
UK Minister for Climate, Kerry McCarthy, made the announcement on 4 May 2025, confirming that the funds, provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), will support Montserrat’s transition away from fossil fuels and toward a sustainable energy future.
The funding will support three main areas: the development of a comprehensive Strategic Plan for energy transformation; technical assistance for project implementation and procurement; and capital investment in viable renewable energy projects that offer value for money.
Minister McCarthy, in a statement said, the UK Government is committed to supporting the UK Overseas Territories as they move away from fossil fuels to lower energy costs, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance energy security.
The minister continued by saying that this funding will build on the constructive work already taking place between the UK and Montserrat and make the vision of a greener Montserrat a reality.
